Daniel J Mumaugh

Colonel Daniel J Mumaugh (USAF Ret), of Springdale, Arkansas, passed away August 16, 2023 following a valiant battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Stutzman Mumaugh; one sister, Katherine Bergquist of Grand Lake, Colorado; five brothers, John, Mark and James of Northwest Arkansas, and David and Brian of Denver, Colorado.

Dan attended the University of Nebraska (Omaha) graduating in 1974 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. via the ROTC as a Distinguished Military graduate. After USAF pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, Dan was assigned to fly KC-135’s at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Oscoda, Michigan. He also served as Aide and Executive Officer to the Commander of the 40th Air Division and became a KC-135 Aircraft Commander while in Michigan. After a year at the Pentagon as an ASTRA officer he was assigned back home to Omaha, Nebraska, where he became an RC-135 Aircraft Commander in the 55th Strategic Wing and a staff officer in the Strategic Air Command Headquarters.

In 1986 Dan was selected to attend Air Command and Staff College and remained there an additional year as part of the faculty. He was next selected to be part of the initial cadre crew force for the B-1B Bomber at McConnell AFB, Kansas. He became an Aircraft Commander, Instructor Pilot and Functional Check Flight Pilot, Wing Director of Training, and Operational Support Squadron Commander.

In 1992 Dan and Cheri headed to Headquarters of Air Combat Command at Langley AFB, Virginia, where he served as Chief Planning and Programs Branch and subsequently was selected to be the Command’s Assistant Director of Staff and Executive Officer to the Commander of Air Combat Command.

After attending Air War College at Maxwell AFB, Dan was the 12th Flying Training Wing Support Group Commander at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, Texas, and then the Wing Commander of the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance AFB, Enid, Oklahoma. The last military move for the Mumaugh’s was to Colorado Springs where Dan was a Command Director at NORAD.

Dan retired after 26 years of active duty and the couple moved to a historic 1915 Craftsman style home and acreage outside of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The couple followed their hearts by becoming active in a golden retriever rescue fostering, adopting and finding forever homes for dozens of dogs.

Dan was honored to be asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Eureka Springs (now CS Bank). He was active in Rotary and sat on the Advisory Board of Mercy Home Healthcare and Hospice. He was Executive Director and Chairman of the Carroll County Community Foundation and was twice elected to the Carroll County Quorum Court. After moves to Goshen and then to Springdale, Dan continued his service to CS Bank and took on new duties on the Broyles Foundation and the Military Officers’ Association Boards. He became even closer to his Savior Jesus Christ while attending St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church in Springdale where he loved serving the close knit church family as a Vestry member and as Junior Warden. He credits Christ for all the blessings of his 71 years of life and for letting him share them with his wife and true partner Cheryl for 49 years.

Per Dan’s request, cremation was chosen.
