Dr. Anne Wilson Schaef

Elizabeth Anne Wilson Schaef (Unega Uwohali Adanv Ageya), 85, of Rogers, Arkansas passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 19, 2020.

Anne was born on March 22, 1934 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas (in the hospital, which in 1934 was above the firehouse), to Paul Ragsdale and Manilla Maude Longan.

Dr. Anne Wilson Schaef was an internationally known author of 17 books including her New York Times bestseller, When Society Becomes an Addict. Her book Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much sold millions of copies around the world in many languages.  She was a huge supporter of women, indigenous people and all creation.  She traveled extensively, teaching, speaking and touching many people and making a profound impact on millions of lives with her Living in Process work and sharing her Cherokee upbringing.  She called herself a proud hillbilly, loved auctions, being in nature, and was grateful for the wonderful life she was given.

She is survived by her husband, John Charles “Chuck” Tesmer of the home; lifetime companion/manager, Pete Sidley of the home; son, Rodney Wilson of Louisville, CO; daughter, Beth Wilson of Portland, OR; grandson, Alexander Saavedra of CA, Hanai daughters Annika Hirmke and Kapua Chandler; Hanai grandsons Jack Hutchens and Aiden Kelly; her beloved international Living in Process network; Family members Josephine Potter of the home and Roger Westbrook of Kauai and her beloved elder dog Coyote (and Bud and Squeaks) and numerous kids from Boulder, Colorado and around the world.  She is preceded in death by her father that raised her, Virgil Willey, and her sisters Peggy Williams, Mary Kahn, Andrea Axtell, Jeanette Timentwa, and Raphaela Best.  She has extended family throughout the world including on the Blackfoot Reserve in Canada; Ohana on Kauai; Chicago; Arizona; Owensboro, Kentucky; Siloam Springs; Montana; Croatia; New Zealand and Australia. She always said that everybody was her family and lived that way.

A private burial will be held at Baptist Mission Cemetery of Adair County, Oklahoma under the direction of Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.backstrom-pyeatte.com.

It is recently that your Living in Process has presented itself to me once again into this life - yet touched my soul and human being in ways never before touched. I have always appreciated your work so much, and the prolific nature of your fine writing.

But today I thank you Dr. Anne Wilson Schaef, as if I was just borne. May you be infinitely Blessed for being who you are and all that you have done for us on this planet. Your visions and work continue to Heal, those who can hear. G-d Bless you.

I was introduced to her Living in Process Work through her student, Alice McClellan, when I lived in Boulder in the early 80's. It changed my life.

I sat between Anne Wilson Schaef and Christiane Northrup at a social gathering the night before an addictions conference in Snowmass in the 80s. My life forever changed. Boundless thanks to Anne for beginning to live in process. Or at least to try!! Blessed Be

I have been reading every year for many years the Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much. Along with my Al-Anon and Adult Children daily readers. For some reason I decided to look up the author of this reader when I read today's reading about despair, and I realized, truly that is what I feel today. And then I read you passed on recently. And I feel gratitude that I had enough sense to know, there are many gifts of myself I have denied and am just now learning to open up for. Thank you being part of my own transformation, even though it took years. Love and Hugs..from Jayne Yuri

Anne, you are so missed! But how wonderful of you to leave us your words with the many books you wrote. You had such a magnificent intellect, along with a powerful spirit and warm humor. I am so glad I got to meet you, and so sorry I let distractions of life keep me from your writing workshops. I woke from a dream about you this morning in which I was trying to find you to talk with you because I just knew you had something important to tell me, but you were not anywhere I looked. Maybe the wisdom you had to share was not to let distractions keep me from my process any longer. I remember your sharing about a near death experience you had once and you talked about what a pleasant feeling it was to lose consciousness. I trust that your new spiritual journey is indeed a pleasant one and hope to meet you again. Prayers for your family all over the planet who mourn your passing. -Rhonda McCauley

Thanks Anne for sharing your abundant experience strength and hope over the years since we met in St Joseph MN, Grateful for experiencing several intensives early on in the 1980's after reading Women's Reality and then your many books and meditation resources. Actually I was reading from one of those this evening a my Men's Alanon Home group this evening and when I returned home, there was an email from my ceya (older brother) Dik Darnell who remembered doctoring me at the Elephant Rock Intensive in Colorado back in the day. Pidamiyedo, for your introducing me to this loving process of recovery. I refer to you as my Tunwin, "Auntie' in the best of the D/Lakota indigenous traditions. And your pioneering work you shared on Co Dependency is still a life giving resource. And I remember Chuck from those early times and look forward to when our paths my cross again, either on this side or in the spirit world. Wiconzani Wo Wokiay Tunwin Anne!
