Roland “R.D.” Devere Ellenbarger passed away peacefully at his home in Hindsville, Arkansas. Born on June 8, 1931, in Spring Valley, R.D. lived a life rich with service, hard work, family, and unforgettable stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nettie and Mark Ellenbarger, his wife of 46 years, Ruth Ann Ellenbarger, and siblings.
He is survived by his son, Ron Ellenbarger (Gayla), daughter, Cathy Wade (Darwin), brother Lee Ellenbarger, nieces, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
R.D was lovingly cared for in his later years by his granddaughter Misty Haywood (Mike), whose devotion and kindness brought him comfort, joy, and dignity. Their unwavering support and the special bond they shared helped make the final chapter of his life one filled with warmth, laughter, and love. Their presence by his side was a true blessing, and their care made all the difference in his final years.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, R.D served his country honorably aboard the U.S.S. Thomason. His time in the Navy helped shape the determined, resourceful, and fiercely patriotic man his family and friends knew and loved.
A home builder by trade, R.D left his mark across Northwest Arkansas in the form of countless homes built with pride, skill, and integrity. Whether raising walls or raising vegetables, his hands were always busy, his back strong, and his spirit tireless. He found joy in the land, tending to his garden with the same care and attention he gave to everything in life.
RD had a deep love for the outdoors and a particular fondness for Corvettes, which he admired with the same enthusiasm he brought to storytelling. He was a masterful narrator of his life’s many adventures—some wild, some humorous, all memorable, told with such passion it felt as if you were there! He was a deeply loving, giving, and loyal man.
To know RD was to know strength, generosity, and a relentless spirit. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the homes he built.
A burial celebration of RD’s life will be held at Friendship Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to plant something in his memory. He had a deep appreciation for nature, and a living tribute would honor his memory beautifully.
